‘Worst case scenario’ for Coevorder carnivores: the last butcher stops

Housing corporation Domesta says when asked that it cannot comment on the matter, because the lawyers of both parties are still in talks. The intention is to find a good solution together, the spokesperson said.

Coevorden will therefore be without a butcher from April, where butcher Auke Kiel left the Friesestraat earlier and Van Raalte already left the Kerkstraat before that.

The news that the butcher is closing is causing a lot of commotion among regular customers. “Everyone is talking about it here at the counter,” says Annelies Hellinga. “At the end of the day you wear it out, but it’s also nice to see how much people sympathize. Everyone thinks it can’t be done like this, but unfortunately it is.”

The Hellinga family, originally from Groningen, resigns themselves to the situation: “You can oppose it, but that will not help you”, thinks Jelle Hellinga. “You then have a long-term procedure and my lawyer expects that you can get an amount of about 75,000 euros, but we have not been helped with that. I don’t feel like it.”
