Frenchmen Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron have become ice dance world champions for the fifth time. After the success at the Olympic Games, the duo, already leading after the rhythm dance, won the free program “Elegie” in front of their home crowd at the World Championships in Montpellier.
Silver and bronze went to the two US couples Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue as well as Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
“Too cheerful” – Ukrainian couple waived
The Ukrainian ice dance couple Oleksandra Nazarova and Maksym Nikitin, who provided one of the magical moments of the day in the rhythm dance on Friday (03/25/2022), did not start in the freestyle on Saturday (03/26/2022). For the rhythm dance, they changed their originally planned program and ran to a remix of a Ukrainian folk song with a song by the Ukrainian Eurovision Song Contest winner Jamala.
This winter, Nazarova/Nikitin ran to a song from the soundtrack to “Moulin Rouge“. Against the background of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which is currently destroying their homeland, this music is too happy. The Rhythm Dance 16. therefore decided not to start.
German teams not at the start
A German couple is not at the start after the German champions Jennifer Janse van Rensburg and Benjamin Steffan had to pass because of a positive corona test at Steffan. The Olympic participants and European Championship twelfth Katharina Müller/Tim Dieck could have moved up at short notice, but saw each other “Mentally and physically unable to represent Germany in the best possible way”as Müller said during the rhythm dance on Friday (03/25/2022) in the sports show live stream.
