World Oceans Day 2023, the beauty initiatives

LWorld Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8th and even the beauty world does its part, with some initiatives cwhich implement, concretely, safeguard actions of our seas. From BioNike which supports the protected marine area of Portofino, a Nivea which takes to heart the posidonias of the Island of Palmaria and Elba, passing through Davines which collects ghost networks abandoned in the Mediterranean e Wed with a special and charity edition of the iconic cream, all beauty initiatives with a “blue heart”.

World Oceans Day 2023, a commitment also for beauty

World Ocean Day has been celebrated since 1992, the result of the World Conference on Environment and Development held that year in Rio de Janeiro and since 2008 it has been recognized by the UN. The 2023 edition has as its theme Ocean Planet: Currents are changing.

The oceans are also the focus of Agenda 2030, a list of key climate goals to be achieved by 2030 drawn up in 2015 by 193 countries around the world. In fact, the seas cover over 70% of the earth’s surface, host over 80% of the world’s biodiversity and produce 50% of the world’s oxygen. Yet they are constantly in danger. A commitment, that of greater attention to the “blue lung” of the Earth, also taken seriously by the world of beauty which annually proposes important initiatives.

BioNike, “guardian” of Portofino

“Here exists one of smallest but most precious marine protected areas in Italy: it was born in 1998 and is a treasure to be protected» tell us the biologists of the area, who have invited us to see their work up close. This summer they will have a hand from BioNike, brand of the Sodalis group, which will give concrete support to the Marina di Portofino area together with Italian non-profit organization Worldrisefounded in 2013 by the biologist and science popularizer Mariasole Bianco and engaged in the conservation and enhancement of the marine environment from various fronts.

The overall goal? “To save 30% of Italian seas by 2030, in line with global goals» says the founder. In particular, in the Portofino area, there is constant work to be done: “We are engaged in bottom cleaning with the collection of stranded nets, lost fishing gear from boats and plastic waste of various types: we have a partnership with the Pro plast company of Alessandria, to which we send the materials for recycling» explain the biologists.

It’s still: “We constantly monitor the fish, both by attendance and by health. We keep a close eye on two precious endangered species, the magnificent lobster and the diadem sea urchin, two unique in our seas. And we protect it Posidoniathe plant that acts as an oxygenating lung in the waters».

There are many causes that put the waters between Santa Margherita and Portofino at risk: «The spillage of ships, the boat anchors that ruin the seabed and marine species, the overheating of the water for the pollution and the climate change that kills gorgonians, the constant pollution» continue the biologists.

And then, the solar: about 14,000 tons of filters are spilled every year in world waters. The 40% of the world’s coral coasts are at risk for exposure to non-biodegradable, eco-toxic, which cause bioaccumulation. Much scientific literature now documents how solar can cause coral bleaching and damage to their DNAsea urchin infections and damage to their immune and reproductive systems, but also inhibition of photosynthesis by some algae greens. And that’s not all. They can reduce the fertility of several species of fish, cause defects in the DNA of mussels and even accumulate on the skin of dolphins.

Fundamental make informed choices, reading the labels of what you choose. THE BioNike sunscreens are sea friendly, as well as safe for the skin, free from octinoxate, oxybenzone, octocrilene and nano filters.

And to find out about more about the hidden wonders and invaluable work of biologistssign up at Worldrise biowalks in the Portofino marine reserve. «Every small artifact we find on the beach is a treasure to be told» explains the biologist Stephen Pedone.

Nivea, at the forefront for the Italian Posidonia

With the initiative Marine oasisthe brand Nivea, a pioneer in the development of skincare products for 140 years, claims la reforestation of Posidonia oceanica in the seabed ofPalmaria Island and ofElba island.

Just around these two pearls of the Italian coast lives one aquatic plant also called “grassland” of the seas, which acts as a marine lung. He is indeed capable of absorb CO2keeps the waters oxygenated, retains polluting chemicals and hosts many living species, in a virtuous circle of fundamental ecological importance.

THE company partner, ZeroCO2Italian-Guatemalan start-up e Worldrise, Italian non-profit organizationwill lend a hand to achieve the goal: plant 5,000 Posidonia between the two locations. «Everything that has an impact on the planet also has it on our skin and health. This is why we are committed to tangible actions in favor of the climate and the environment. It is a creed, as well as a responsibility,” he says Andrew MondoniGeneral Manager Southern Europe of Beiersdorf.

“Care beyond skin, beauty beyond the skin”. Nivea has already achieved important results. She collected kilos of waste in the Mediterraneancreated 6 thousand square meters of greenery in Ticino Park and recovered the Pippa Bacca garden in Milan with WWF and Green City Italia. Now, eyes under water!

ISDIN and plastic collection

ISDIN continues its commitment to safeguarding the seas. In 2023 the solar brand joins Gravity Wave with a very clear goal: for each bottle of Fusion Water consumed throughout the year, the Spanish photoprotection brand will recover the equivalent weight of plastic waste at sea. The goal is to eliminate over 60 tons of plastic.

This commitment goes hand in hand with the replanting in the seas of theseaweed Posidonia started in 2022 and the eco-design project that will allow the brand to reduce the impact of its products thanks to redesigned formulas and packaging.

La Mer and the planting of Posidonia Oceanica

La Mer also joins Worldrisenon-profit organization chaired by Mariasole Bianco, in the planting of Posidonia Oceanicafundamental for the ecological balance of the Mediterranean coasts.

Always committed to the protection of the seas, over the years La Mer has founded La Mer Blue Heart Oceans Funda resource that helps support international organizations committed to ocean protection. Among the projects of the foundation OceanEcho 30X30, the initiative that aims to build a global youth movement to protect 30% of our ocean by 2030.

Also, on World Oceans Day, l will be availablea limited edition version of La Mer Blue Heart, the moisturizing cream based on marine ingredients, the brand’s best seller.

Davines and the Protect the Sea campaign: the collection of abandoned nets

Every year there are 640 thousand tons of fishing equipment abandoned in the seas, which make up 46% of the floating islands of waste found in the sea. Every net lost at sea is a danger to hundreds of species. In 2023 Davines together with Sea Shepherd mapped the Mediterranean in search of ghost nets to collect, dispose or recycle them.

From Rilastil to Hawaiian, the formulations of ocean-friendly sunscreens

There are many brands that have reformulated their sunscreens in recent years. The line Sun System of Rilastil has been completely restudied: it is free of silicones and water-soluble filters, easily released into the water and responsible for coral bleaching. Furthermore there is a lower presence of EDTA and nanoparticles while the new packaging has a low environmental impact.

Also this year too Rilastil supports #starealsoleresponsibly of the ANT Foundation, the melanoma prevention campaign, and Marevivo Onlus to contribute to the health of the planet and raise public awareness on the issues of sustainability and beach pollution.
