World Food Program threatens to halt aid in Chad from May due to lack of funds | Abroad

“We will not have any financial aid from May,” said Pierre Honnorat, director of the WFP in Chad. In April, the agency was already forced to reduce the number of refugees it could help from 455,600 to 270,000. The country has a total of about 583,000 registered refugees and 381,000 internally displaced persons.

WFP needs $142.7 million over the next six months to continue providing food to refugees, displaced persons and other Chadians affected by extreme weather events in recent years. “If additional funding is not forthcoming, food aid will be cut to 100 percent by May 2023,” the WFP warned.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has estimated Chad’s needs for this year at $172.5 million. But the country has so far received only 15 percent of the total amount.
