European champions Spain easily defeated Georgia and won all their games in World Cup qualifying. Final World Cup participation is just a formality.
Without superstar Lamine Yamal, the Spaniards confidently won the new edition of the round of 16 of EURO 2024 on Saturday (11/15/2025) 4-0 (3-0). Luis de la Fuente’s team appeared unimpressed by the discussions surrounding Yamal. Mikel Oyarzabal gave the Spaniards the lead with a penalty in the away game in Tbilisi in the 11th minute. Martin Zubimendi (22nd minute) and Ferran Torres (35th) increased the score to 3-0 before the break. In the second half, Oyarzabal headed the final score (63′).
Before the last matchday in Group E, the Spaniards are almost certainly qualified for the World Cup. They have three points and 14 goals ahead of Turkey, who are also victorious (2-0 against Bulgaria).
Spain cracks Georgia on the left
In preparation for the game, the Spaniards seemed to have identified the Georgians’ right defense as a weak point. Finally, they mostly launched their attacks on their left side with Marc Cucurella and Alex Baena. This was also the case in the eighth minute, when they put Torres in the spotlight. His attempted back pass bounced into the hand of a Georgian. After using VAR, the Spaniards were awarded the penalty, which Oyarzabal converted.
Overall, the Georgian defense was overwhelmed by the Spaniards’ passing game and their constant positional maneuvers. After another attack from the left, the ball came to Fabian Ruiz in the middle, who made contact with the ball to the starting Martin Zubimendi. Zubimendi is nominally a defensive midfielder, but converted to center forward by chipping over goalkeeper Giorgi Marmadashvili.
Spain doesn’t allow anything
The game went past Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, the Georgians’ star, most of the time. Only shortly after the 2-0 lead, in the 25th minute, did the Georgians manage to take possession of the ball for a few minutes. But before a dangerous chance could arise, the Spaniards once again came into the hosts’ penalty area from the left side. Oyarzabal crossed and found Torres, who decided the game early but definitely.
After the break, the Georgians prepared to avoid too much defeat and defended deeply. Accordingly, Torres was free to cross from the right halffield to Oyarzabal, who carefully headed it into the far corner to make it 4-0.
On the last matchday, Spain will play against Turkey on Tuesday (11/18/2025). If the Spaniards don’t lose 0-7 or higher, they will definitely take part in the 2026 World Cup.
