First Felix Loch won, then Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken also won in the doubles and at the end of the World Cup the mixed relay also cheered: The German lugers left Whistler in Canada with three first places.
“I’m very happy with the team’s result”said national coach Norbert Loch after the race in Canada. “I would say that after the Innsbruck weekend we came back very strong and as a team.”
Gold and silver – double success in doubles
One day after the 50th World Cup victory of three-time Olympic champion Felix Loch, Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken secured success in doubles ahead of their teammates and six-time Olympic champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt.
“We’re slowly getting going and are finding the feeling for our sled again”said Eggert after two runs in which he and his partner both set the fastest times but didn’t get through the ice channel as well as they could. “Especially when exiting the last corner, I wasn’t sure if we could still do it. Especially since we only had a lead of 0.002 seconds.”added his backer Benecken.
The third German men’s doubles, Hannes Orlamünder and Paul Gubitz, fell back to fifth place after the third best time in the first run and left the Austrians Juri Gatt and Riccardo Schöpf on the podium.
The relay is also faster than the competition
In the final mixed relay, Loch, Eggert and Benecken were joined by individual silver medalist Julia Taubitz from Oberwiesenthal. And the quartet harmonized excellently – in the end there was first place again.
Although the German relay quartet was under a lot of pressure from the Latvians who had started directly in front of it, they managed their three runs well and held their own just ahead of the competition. Third was the team from Austria.
Degenhardt/Rosenthal cannot defend their lead
In the women’s doubles, Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal from Altenberg and Winterberg were still in the lead after the first round, but were unable to defend it in the second run and fell back to third place.
The two Italians Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer won ahead of the Austrian duo Selina Egle and Lara Kipp.
