Karl Geiger and the hill in Kuusamo, that just fits – that’s what you thought. But a weak jump blocked his second round. Markus Eisenbichler is the best DSV athlete.
In qualifying, Karl Geiger indicated what he was capable of. With 148 meters he finished second there behind the Norwegian Halvor Egner Granerud, who extended the hill record set by Anze Lanisek only yesterday by a further 1.5 meters to 150.5 meters.
But in the competition it didn’t fit. The ski flying world champion of 2020 missed the take-off on the Rukatunturi hill and only got to 122.5 meters. He missed the second round in 33rd place. Stephan Leyhe, who was eighth in the first round the day before, did not make it into the top 30 either.
Eisenbichler with top ten chances
The other four German jumpers made it into the second round. This time Markus Eisenbichler showed a stable first jump and a clean landing. The 137.5 meters were enough for ninth place. He is 14.8 points behind the leader from Poland, Dawid Kubacki, who showed his best jump of the weekend at 145.5 meters, which is about eight meters. Second place went to the winner of the previous day, Anze Lanisek from Slovenia (145 meters / + 1.0 points) ahead of the Japanese Naoki Nakamura (144 m / + 4.6 points).
Germany’s Markus Eisenbichler in action
Constantin Schmid jumped 133.5 meters on his 23rd birthday and was 14th, one place behind teammate Pius Paschke (132.5 meters). Andreas Wellinger landed at 133.5 meters and is therefore still within striking distance of a place in the top 15.
