A fatal accident occurred in the quarter-finals between Argentina and the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. A Kenyan security guard was killed.
As the Qatari organizers confirmed on Wednesday (12/14/2022), the security officer fell badly during the game.
After receiving immediate medical care, he was then taken to the intensive care unit of the Hamad Medical Hospital in Doha, but died there “despite the best efforts” on Tuesday (December 13, 2022). According to official information, it is said to have been the fourth death in connection with the World Cup.
Earlier, during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a man from the Philippines died after an accident while repairing work at the Saudi Arabian national team’s resort.
CNN: Fall from the eighth floor of the stadium
The American television channel CNN reports that the current case involves 24-year-old Kenyan John Njua Kibue. He fell from the eighth floor of the stadium while on duty. This is what his sister Ann Wanjiru told the broadcaster and demanded: “We don’t have the money to get justice for him, but we want to know what happenedt.”
CNN has received a medical certificate from the Hamad General Hospital in Doha. The document states that the security guard “severe head injuries, facial and pelvic fractures” suffered.
The tournament organizers announced an immediate investigation into how the fall had happened. In addition, they promised to pay the family of the deceased any outstanding wages and taxes.
According to media reports, however, several thousand workers have died on Qatari construction sites since the 2010 World Cup was awarded.
The death of US sports journalist Grant Wahl, who collapsed in the media stand during the quarterfinals between Argentina and the Netherlands, also caused dismay during the World Cup. In addition, a photographer died during the tournament.
