The weakened Australians needed a win to be able to intervene in the race for a direct World Cup ticket. Driven by Frankfurt’s Ajdin Hrustic, they were unable to take advantage of the few chances they had. The “Socceroos” now need to win two knockout games in June to be at a World Cup for the fourth time in a row. They meet third-placed Group A, currently the United Arab Emirates, first and then South American opponents in a possible final.

With the victory of the Japanese, Saudi Arabia can no longer take the World Cup ticket in Group B. Iran and South Korea had previously secured World Cup participation in the other Asian qualifying group. In addition to hosts Qatar, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France, Croatia, Serbia, Spain, England, the Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina have already been confirmed as World Cup participants. There are 32 teams in total.
