But somewhat surprisingly, Mario Götze is in the squad for the German national soccer team for the World Cup in Qatar. The professional from Eintracht Frankfurt spoke up after the nomination.
“It’s been a while… five years to be exact,” Götze wrote about a picture of himself in the DFB jersey, which he shared on social media.
The 2014 world champion added: “I’m very happy to be part of the German World Cup squad again and I’m grateful for the trust of Hansi Flick and his coaching staff.”
The nomination is the “reward” for the “hard work” he has done over the past months and years, according to Götze.
“But it wouldn’t have been possible without my wife, my family, my great teammates and coaches,” said Götze, adding: “Thank you for your support.”
Götze from Frankfurt, who scored the winning goal against Argentina in Rio 2014 (1-0 aet) is celebrating his comeback in the national team after a five-year absence.
“Our focus is on how he performs and what he can give us. Mario is a brilliant footballer who intuitively has flashes of inspiration,” said Hansi Flick about the 30-year-old’s nomination.
The national coach continued to rave: “The last games he was at a very high level. I can see in every game: He is in top shape and can walk 90 minutes three times a week.”
Bobic: Excessive expectations weaken Götze
Recently, former European champion Fredi Bobic also praised Götze’s appointment. “Mario is an asset for this team. He works incredibly well in a good system and is technically extremely strong,” said the sports director of Hertha BSC.
However, Bobic also warned: “He will never be the big leader in a team. Excessive expectations weaken him. Mario always wants to have fun.”
