World Championships in wheelchair basketball: women play for bronze, men for seventh place

At the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in the United Arab Emirates, the German women narrowly missed the final and are now playing for bronze. The men are in the match for seventh place.

In the semifinals, the women’s DBS selection lost to China 45:49 (10:13/19:19/32:33). On Tuesday (June 20th, 2023) Germany will play against the USA for bronze in the World Trade Center in Dubai.

“We definitely played well, keeping China under 50 points as planned, but unfortunately our offensive wasn’t strong enough that day to win a World Cup semi-final.”said national coach Passiwan disappointed after the match: “Of course it hurts, but now we want to get the medal in the small final on Tuesday!”

Men fight for seventh place

In the duel of the disappointed, the German men’s selection suffered their second World Cup defeat in Dubai in the first placement game for places five to eight. The DBS team lost against Italy by 45:52 (14:14/18:26/29:36) and is now playing against Australia in the final duel for seventh place.

“Today we weren’t ready to accept the intensity of the Italians, who were much more physical than us and ultimately deservedly won this game.”explains national coach Nicolai Zeltinger, who adds with disappointment: “Our defense was absolutely fine, but in attack we didn’t manage to get our potential onto the floor.”
