The German kayak teams won double gold in the first competition at the canoe slalom world championships in Augsburg. After the success of the women, the men also won the team competition.
Led by Tokyo Olympic champion Ricarda Funk, the women’s trio with Jasmin Schornberg and Elena Lilik showed a flawless run and ended up 2.48 seconds ahead of the Slovenians, who were also flawless. Poland came in third.
Among the men, Hannes Aigner, who came third in the Olympics, caused a surprise with his Augsburg colleague Noah Hegge and Stefan Hengst (KR Hamm). The team beat the Brits in the ice channel with a lead of 1.78 seconds. The French came in third. “It wasn’t perfect, but overall it was very good, which is rare with three canoeists on the course,” said Aigner.
“The spectators are fully behind us”
The run was unbelievable for Olympic champion Funk. “It’s cool that all three drivers hit everything like that. I don’t know when I’ve experienced it before,” said Funk, who was also impressed by the atmosphere: “The spectators are fully behind us, we can do that count on it.”
For Lilik from Augsburg, after all the surprise world champion last year in the canoe, it was pure relief: “I felt a bit sick, I was super excited. You don’t want to make any mistakes in the team either. That was the best team run that we did ever driven,” she said. For ex-world champion Schornberg, who gave birth to a daughter in November 2020, it was a successful comeback.
