Double gold in athletics again: Two years after the legendary joint Olympic victory of high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Essa Barshim in Tokyo, pole vaulters Nina Kennedy (Australia) and Katie Moon (USA) have decided on a draw at the World Championships in Budapest Two gold medals agreed.
In a gripping competition, both had jumped 4.90 m – at the same time the world record for the year – in the third attempt. After that, both failed three times at 4.95 m. According to the rules, both athletes can then play a jump-off for victory – or just agree on a double victory.
The Italian Tamberi and Barshim from Qatar, both big buddies, practiced this in 2021. When there was a threat of a tie, Barshim asked, Can’t we both have gold? You could. Tamberi won this time in Budapest as a soloist.
