It had been in the air for a while, but now it is official: Mario Götze is leaving PSV. The German, who shot his country to the world title in 2014, thanks the club for the past few seasons in an emotional message on social media.
It was a resounding surprise when Götze made the switch to PSV in the summer of 2020. At the time, he had been struggling with his form at Borussia Dortmund for some time, but the scorer of the only goal in the 2014 World Cup final was received with open arms.
In Eindhoven, Götze showed his class over the past two seasons. However, he is now saying goodbye to the Eredivisie. The 30-year-old playmaker is expected to sign with Eintracht Frankfurt soon.
“Even when nobody was there during the pandemic, we felt your support.”
On Tuesday afternoon, Götze said goodbye to all PSV fans via his social media. “There are so many reasons to thank you. For example for your warm welcome, which made me feel welcome from the first moment. I will never forget what it was like to score in a full stadium. Even when there was no one during the pandemic we felt your support.”
The German has a special word of thanks for his colleagues. “We have worked very hard over the past two years. I am happy that we were able to bring a cup to Eindhoven together.”
