The high jump competition in Eugene is more open than ever. A total of 14 jumpers, including the two German participants Tobias Potye and European Champion Mateusz Przybylko, have already cracked the 2.30 m this year and can flirt with the final – at least. The two Tokyo Olympic champions Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar and the Italian Gianmarco Tamberi did not jump any higher in the open air. The outstanding jumper this season is the South Korean Woo Sanghyeok, who is aiming for his first major title in Oregon. The spoilsport could be the American Shelby McEwen. 2.30 m are also called for to ensure a safe entry into the final.

This duel is looming in Oregon again. Nowicki goes into the ring as a slight favorite, who threw a meter further in 2022. Tokyo fourth-placed Michailo Kochan from Ukraine, Olympic silver medalist Eivind Henriksen from Norway and French runner-up Quentin Bigot could also take part in the medal fight. The German representative Tristan Schwandke only jumped on the World Cup train after being nominated at the last second and is considered a blatant outsider even in the prelims.

The world association World Athletics (WA) has banned all athletes, coaches and officials from Russia and Belarus from all events under its auspices “for the foreseeable future” because of the attack on Ukraine. The Russian Federation (RusAF) has been suspended since 2015 because of the doping scandal. Even as neutral athletes, Russian and Belarusian athletes are not allowed to start at the World Cup.

While there were often complaints about the heat at the last World Cup in 2019 in Doha, it will be hot again in Eugene, but the humidity will not be nearly as high as in the capital of Qatar. The German athletes had prepared for the competitions at a training camp in Santa Barbara, California, over the past few days. After cancellations due to injury and illness, 78 German athletes were last scheduled for Oregon. The fact that the World Cup landed in Eugene – with 170,000 inhabitants by far the smallest venue in the history of the World Cup since 1983 – still occupies the investigators today. Eugene is the founding place of the world’s most powerful sporting goods manufacturer – Nike. The mega company is said to have been partly responsible for the fact that the World Cup was surprisingly awarded to Oregon in spring 2015. The competitions at Eugene’s Hayward Fields are the first track and field championships to be held on US soil. The stadium was built at a cost of around $200 million and is located on the University of Oregon campus. For the World Cup, the seating capacity was increased from 12,650 to 30,000 spectators with additional grandstands.
