The lead over third-placed Qieyang Shijie is nine seconds, with a duo of Yasury Palacios of Guatemala and Paula Perez of Ecuador now trailing by 27 seconds.

Up front, Poland’s Katarzyna Zdzieblo picks up where she left off with her surprising second place finish in the 20K, pushing the pace at the front of the pack. The other medal winners, Kimberly Garcia Leon and Qieyang Shijie, are also up there after two kilometers.

The starting shot! At 6:15 a.m. local time, a total of 41 walkers set off on a three-hour odyssey on the one-kilometer circuit through Eugene. Appropriately for the time of day, the number of spectators is still very small, but it is very cool – even cloudy today – and pleasant for the athletes.

The women’s 35K walk marks a first since the 50K was abolished. The battle for the first world title in this discipline will likely come down to who recovered best from the 20K a week earlier as the most promising goers dare a double start. This year, in addition to the Spaniard Maria Perez, the Chinese Qieyang Shijie, third over 20 km, and the newly crowned world champion Kimberly Garcia Leon from Peru attracted attention with top times. It wouldn’t be surprising if one or both in Eugene snagged a second medal. German walkers are missing from the start list.

Welcome to the eighth day of the World Championships in Athletics! It will start shortly with the women’s 35 km walk. During the night there are four more decisions: the javelin throw with Annika Marie Fuchs from 3.20 a.m. and the 400 m hurdles for women (4.50 a.m.) and twice the 400 m (4.15/4.35 a.m.). From a German point of view, it will also be in the pole vault qualification with a trio around Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (from 2.05 a.m.), the heats over 4×100 m (from 2.40/3.05 a.m.) and the semifinals over 800 m (from 3.35 a.m.) with Christina Herring and Majtie Kolberg interesting.
