Geert Wilders has withdrawn his PVV from the cabinet. It is an action of which the moment is the most unexpected. Because that a government that is dependent on populists does not reach the finish line is a political fact in the Netherlands. We have also learned that lesson several times in Brabant.
In 2019, forum for Democracy became the second largest party in the Provincial States. In the first instance, the extreme right -wing party falls outside the boat, but after the CDA drops a coalition with middle parties, the Christian Democrats go on a right adventure together with the VVD. Forum for Democracy becomes the new coalition partner and delivers two deputies: Eric De Bie and Peter Smit.
Within Forum for Democracy there is a lot of unrest because of statements by national leader Thierry Baudet. In Brabant, the members of the States of the party dislike controversies as a problem of the national department. “We are Brabant, Baudet is The Hague,” it sounds.
That attitude turned out not to be sustained. Riot after riot is crumbling, for example when anti -Semitic views in the youth department come out. The group also crumbles in Brabant. CDA and VVD cancel the confidence in the forum for Democracy in May 2021. Smit has already left the party, a month later the Bie does that too. The coalition with the middle parties is being restored.
Bbb ruin it
Two years later, newcomer Boerburger movement (BBB) does a little extra on top of the trick of Forum. With 11 seats, the BBB becomes the largest party in Brabant. Leader John Frenken conducts negotiations with VVD, GroenLinks and PvdA that are started quickly.
But in view of the port, the BBB returns to more than 20 parts of the coalition agreement on nitrogen, agriculture, water and nature. The other negotiating parties cannot agree to this. The formation failed, Frenken and his BBB fall outside the boat in the new negotiations and join an opposition of extremely right-wing parties.
Rural
Also in the national politically proven collaborations with populist parties to fail several times. Think of the Balkenende I cabinet, which died in 2002 due to the argument within the LPF. Or the first Rutte cabinet (2010-2012), that Geert Wilders was dependent on his PVV for a majority in the Lower House. And on Tuesday, Wilders joined the list for the second time with failed populist experiments.
