Work on storm surge barrier Nieuwpoort has started again
“On February 9, the Coastal Department informed the yacht clubs and the city of Nieuwpoort about recent developments,” says MDK spokesman Peter Van Camp.
Examine flow rate
“The storm surge barrier is part of the Coastal Safety Master Plan and must protect Nieuwpoort and the surrounding area against flooding in the event of a heavy storm surge from the sea,” says Peter Van Camp.
“Four months ago, the works were partially halted because of uncertainty about the effective flow rates in the fairway. Additional studies were therefore carried out to clarify the situation. A team of experts examined the results and concluded that additional streamlining measures will improve navigability As a result, the works can now be restarted.”
Explanation to yacht clubs and city
The Coastal Division sat around the table with the yacht clubs and the city of Nieuwpoort to clarify the results of the additional studies. It is now being discussed with the contractor when the work on the site can be restarted.
Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters: “I am pleased that there is clarity and that work on the storm surge barrier in Nieuwpoort can start again. Coastal Safety Master Plan and this storm surge barrier are essential to protect our coast and hinterland against flooding. In doing so, we also take maximum account of the concerns of pleasure craft.”
