Filming of Alec Baldwin’s western film Rust will resume in the spring. After cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was struck by a real bullet from a live weapon and died from her injuries in October 2021, the future of the project was uncertain. So now the flick produced by Baldwin – who fired the loaded gun – is definitely being implemented. An accompanying documentary about the Hutchins is being planned.
Baldwin has reached an agreement with Hutchin’s widower, Matthew Hutchins, to serve as executive producer on Rust, The Hollywood Reporter reports. In addition, he should participate in profits. He and his son also received a payment from an insurance company.
Several members of the film crew previously involved in the production plan to return to the set. These include director Joel Souza, who was shot in the 2021 incident, stunt coordinator Allen Grauf – and Baldwin will also be filming his scenes. Bianca Cline (“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”) will be the new camerawoman. She intends to donate her salary to a good cause.
“Rust” will be completed under union agreements, previously unorganized workers were also employed. All weapons and ammunition are banned from the film set. This means that there are no more blanks in the project either.
Documentary about Hutchins
In memory of Halyna Hutchins, a documentary about her life is being planned. It will show her childhood in a Soviet naval base, her life in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev and her career as a cinematographer. The time on the set of “Rust” is also considered. The documentary will feature Baldwin’s Western director Rachel Mason and producer Julee Metz, and executive producer Matthew Hutchins.
The incident
Two years ago, the fatal shots were fired on the set during a rehearsal. A revolver was accidentally loaded with real ammunition – control mechanisms failed. Hutchins and Souza were hit by the bullets. The camerawoman succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Then-Armsmaster Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin is also on trial with the same charges. Hutchins’ relatives in Ukraine are also demanding damages from the actor. Assistant director Dave Halls signed a statement to settle a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
