Woody Harrelson: “I’m not a Marxist, I’m an anarchist”

Harrelson plays a Marxist captain in the film Triangle of Sadness, which premiered at the festival. When asked about this, he said on Sunday: “I’m not a Marxist, I’m an anarchist, so in that sense we differ.”

After some laughter from the audience, he added: “I’m the kind of guy who just thinks it’s disgusting when a superpower, with all its military might, without provocation, takes a country like Iraq, uh, sorry, Afghan…, uh, sorry, Viet…, Korea, no, sorry, attacking Ukraine!” Anyway, he loves his character in the film, he added.

Triangle of Sadness is the new film from former Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund – a satire on the world of influencers and the super-rich. Among other things, he plays on a luxury yacht. After this crashes, a few of the ship’s travelers are stranded on an island where the hierarchies are reversed. Because an employee who took care of the toilets on the yacht is the only one who can catch fish, make fire and thus ensure the survival of the people.

The film, which is in competition, received a great deal of applause and a standing ovation lasting minutes on Saturday night. Iris Berben can be seen in a supporting role.
