Wood artist Jakko does a Rembrandt: ‘The Night Watch’ in 160,000 pixels

What does ‘The Night Watch’ look like in wood? Wood artist Jakko Woudenberg from Warmenhuizen hopes to get an answer to that question in eighteen months. The originally parquet layer started today with a monster job. Jakko saws 160,000 wooden pixels to get the painting as faithful as possible into a floor. “You can dance to this Rembrandt.”

Jakko Woudenberg: “23 years ago I was laying parquet as a student and suddenly Rembrandt came to my mind: could I make ‘The Night Watch’ out of wood? Well, today I start with the first panel.” There are 58 types of wood available in all kinds of colors. Jakko saws 160,000 pixels of it, blocks of wood of one square centimeter.

“It has to become a project of connection,” says Woudenberg. He hopes that enthusiastic Rembrandt enthusiasts will help him put together the 329 panels needed for the painting. You can sign up via website.

You can also go there to sponsor a pixel. Like Rembrandt himself, Jakko Woudenberg hopes to finish his ‘Night Watch’ in a year and a half. And then? “I hope to get him around the world. That will work.”
