Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand: Germany in pot 1 in the World Cup draw

Status: 10/17/2022 7:05 p.m

The groups for the women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be drawn on Saturday. Coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s team is in pot 1.

The eight groups, each with four teams, will be drawn on Saturday (22/10/2022) at 8.30 a.m. CEST in Auckland/New Zealand. Germany is in Pot 1. The seeding list for the 32 teams was based on the version of the world rankings published last week.

There are two exceptions to this:

  1. The hosts from Australia and New Zealand are in Raffle 1.
  2. The three teams that later made up the playoffs are in Raffle 4.

Germany is thus avoiding the big favorites, but the other pots also have challenging opponents ready, for example the Netherlands in pot 2 or Denmark in pot 3.

In the draw, only one team from each confederation may be drawn in each of the eight groups. The exception is UEFA, which has eleven teams – so up to two European teams can be in a group. The constellation of playoffs should be taken into account “if possible” in this principle.

Playoffs: Ten teams play for three spots

Ten teams play in three playoff-Tournaments (17.-23.02.2022) still have three places in the tournament. The tournaments are designed differently due to the number of participating countries.

  • Playoff A: Cameroon and Thailand are playing for a place in the final, in which Portugal are already seeded.
  • Playoff B: Senegal and Haiti play for a place in the final, in which Chile are already seeded.
  • Playoff C: The two semi-finals are Taiwan – Paraguay and Papua New Guinea – Panama. The two winning teams contest the final.

World Cup 2023: For the first time with 32 teams

The 2023 World Cup is the first women’s World Cup to be held with 32 teams. The tournament will be held from July 20th to August 20th, 2023. It is the ninth World Cup tournament in history.

The FIFA Council awarded the 2020 tournament to Australia and New Zealand. At the time, all European and South American representatives voted in favor of the losing bid from Colombia, even though it had been assessed as weaker in the FIFA test reports. At the time, the DFB had no vote on the committee.
