Women’s rights: the choice to have children and the responsibilities of politics

“Lthe strength of women lies in their ability to generate ”. How many times have I heard this phrase repeated ecstatically by men and proudly by women.

But it is time to deepen this assumption and its consequences, because something tells me that the time is dangerously ripe for a regression of the role of women to that of proud mares.

The biggest pitfall starts from the reasoning, even if sensible and acceptable, concerning the collapse of births: a real phenomenon which is also beginning to affect countries, such as China, where births have historically been, if anything, controlled.

Among the considerations mainly of an economic nature about the dangers of a society that is no longer growing, he comes forward a creeping form of blaming women who delay the time to have childrenoften limiting themselves to just one, or they give up altogether.

Denying oneself motherhood almost passes through an act of selfishnessdetermined by a desire for self-determination that could find better fulfillment in bringing children into the world, thus fulfilling a useful, necessary and recognized role.

Even the arguments that have recently begun to emerge around the right to abortion, and the need to push women to a greater reflection on the decision to practice it, perhaps through an assisted path (which, moreover, already exists), sound like a form of reminder. to greater personal but also social responsibility.

Not to mention the slogan of the last election campaign, in which a private choice, such as motherhood, was heralded alongside values such as Christianity and patriotismwith a shift of the same in a sphere of interest where what public prevails over the private.

There is enough to keep your guard up. We know it very well but it is better to repeat it: a woman is not above all her ability to procreate, in the same way that a man is not first of all her possibility of igniting life in a womb. A womb that cannot be at the disposal of autarchic designs for the repopulation of the world.
