Women’s rights, freedom of choice and the demographic crisis

Fperhaps, in a technological age, someone might think that the binary system, on-offas well as for computers can also work for women according to economic cycles.

The 12 women capable of changing the world: Time's selection

Full socialism, women work in the factories and rice fields on equal terms with their comrades; Then it is necessary to counteract the excessive increase in the population and the one-child rule is imposed (male is better, females can be thrown away); if the country declines, turn around.

In China, at the recent XIII National Women’s Congress, President Xi Jinping has called on his officials to encourage women (only them) to follow traditional values of caring for the familychildren and elderly people together, in the hope that this will reverse the demographic crisis.

On the contrary, in Africa, youth is exploding: the average age is 19, there is the highest fertility rate in the world, and to combat violence, poverty and unemployment many hopes are placed in the women’s revolution.

Destiny wanted girls to be married at 14 and mothers immediately, but today more and more people are participating in education programmes and they stay in school longer. Thus the age of marriage is delayed, children are spaced out, families are smaller and more manageable. More the girls learn to be independent, support themselves and the economy turns around.

In the USA the number of working women is at its highest and the largest group is made up of graduate mothers with children under 5 years old. Because today, post Covid, with a high level of study it is easier to find remote jobs.

They benefited from it even workers with disabilities, today at record employment levelsand fathers at home dedicate more time to caring for their children.

The world turns fast and where politics and economics are short of breath, it is demography that lays bare the future. And demographics still means for many “mothers who have children”: just press the “on” button, right?

Let’s defend women’s rights (illustration by Cinzia Zenocchini).

But bringing women back is a dystopian nightmare; regimenting them with alternating current, claiming to dominate the body and reproduction for the purposes of the homeland and consumption, now only one child, not females, now two, better three, is an inadmissible request.

Conversely, accept that children are made in two, honors and burdens well distributedequipping ourselves so that services are active and free, work is safe and well paid, favorable conditions so that sparks of the future are rekindled, it works. Perfectible, adaptable recipe, but with proven effectiveness.

In the middle there is our life, with our dreams, even those of a life of work, fulfillment, children, each according to their own desires and times. And even if the world were deaf (it seems deaf) to our legitimate aspirations, we need to remember that there are only advantages for everyone in encouraging women’s work: studies, research, data and concrete cases certify this.

What dark resistance force then drives men to deny women’s freedom of choice, how much to work, who to love, how to live? Is it really still the fear of losing control, privilege, place?
