From next season, VV Alkmaar will disappear from the Eredivisie for women. The football club from Alkmaar is incorporated by AZ, which will start again with a women’s team. After six years, VV Alkmaar will come to an end in the Eredivisie.
Last year, the road was already set with a declaration of intent. As a result, contact between VV Alkmaar and AZ has already been intensified. It was then investigated whether AZ could take over women’s football from VV Alkmaar. From the 2023/2024 season, AZ will therefore be represented in the women’s premier league again.
Robert Eenhoorn, general manager of AZ, “It is great that after an absence of almost twelve years, women’s football is back under the banner of AZ. It fits in with the vision of the club to not only be able to offer a future to boys and men, but soon also to girls and women playing football. Moreover, we believe in the national and global growth of women’s football. We want to contribute to that from AZ.”
Founding fathers
In 2007, AZ was one of the clubs that started in the women’s premier league. Together with ADO Den Haag, sc Heerenveen, FC Twente, FC Utrecht and Willem II, AZ was one of the founders. Under the leadership of trainer Ed Engelkes, AZ became national champions three times. In 2011, the Alkmaarders pulled the plug on women’s football because of the financial situation. From 2017/2018, VV Alkmaar was active in women’s football.
