National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg will announce the final squad of 23 German soccer players for the European Championship on Saturday.
27 players are currently preparing for the first of two training camps in Herzogenaurach. On Wednesday, Sara Däbritz will join the provisional 28-strong squad. The midfielder from Paris Saint-Germann, who is moving to Champions League winners Olympique Lyon for the new season, had games until the end of June and then two weeks of vacation.
The final team for the tournament will meet next Tuesday, and the friendly against Switzerland in Erfurt is scheduled for June 24th. The record European champion flies to London on July 3rd. On July 8th, the European Championship will take place against Denmark, followed by further group matches against title candidate Spain (July 12th) and Finland (July 16th).
The fact that five players from the current team are not allowed to go to England is “not really an issue for us,” said Lina Magull from FC Bayern Munich at a press conference on Monday. “I think that pushes everyone even more in training to get their best performance. With the ulterior motive that some more will be canceled, it is of course the case that you step on the gas even more.”
Magull and Lena Lattwein raved about the conditions in the team quarters at DFB partner Adidas, which had previously occupied Hansi Flick’s men’s national team. “We have an outstanding facility here, very nice accommodation,” reported midfielder Lattwein from VfL Wolfsburg. Given the additional darts, table tennis, beach volleyball and other opportunities, she said: “We don’t have that much free time to take advantage of all of that.”
