With currently 16.7 million followers on Instagram alone, Lehmann is one of the best known and most present figures in women’s football, according to his own statement with an advertising mail for a sports drink hundreds of thousands of euros. However, the 26-year-old not only has fans. She focuses too much on social media, should be more on her sporting development, critics replied. The Swiss public therefore did not only meet with approval that she was nominated for the home European Championship by national coach Pia Sundhage despite a maximum mixed season for Juventus in Italy.
But now a Swiss TV expert has clearly taken part to Lehmann-and defended the attacker against criticism. “I don’t see it that way,” replied the former German Bundesliga player and today’s TV expert Carmen Höfflin to the thesis that Lehmann would not be a international without a social media. And explained directly why: You have to separate Lehmann between the player Lehmann and the social media personality. “I think that is two very different factors,” said Höfflin at DAZN.
There is nothing against Lehmann’s presence on social media, “who also have a player and a woman nowadays and can build up a second mainstay. Not everyone has to like that either.” But: “People are interested in what they do. But that has nothing to do with the footballing.”
Höfflin also emphasizes Lehmann’s sporting importance: “I also found it understandable that it was initially not taken into account because she actually had very, very few deployment times at Juventus.” However: “Your international experience is very important. She also brings playful skills with her pace, her dribbling and her risk. Sure, the season is missing, but nevertheless she is not nominated unfounded.”
In the first two group games in Switzerland against Norway (1: 2) and Iceland (2: 0) Lehmann only on the bench, Sundhage was not taken into account. In the third group game on Thursday against Finland (from 9 p.m. in the LiveTicker at T-Online) there is the next chance of an assignment for the currently controversial figure in women’s football.
