Women’s EM: Austria secures quarter-final duel with DFB team

Austria’s soccer players celebrated their second victory at the European Championships in England and thus secured a ticket for the quarter-finals against the German team.

In Brighton, the team of national coach Irene Fuhrmann defeated the former world champion Norway 1-0 (1-0). For the favorite Scandinavians, the tournament ends after the group stage.

Striker Nicole Billa from TSG Hoffenheim crowned the strong performance of the Austrians in the 37th minute of the game, for whom a draw would have been enough to advance to the next round.

On Thursday (9 p.m. / ARD and DAZN) Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s team is waiting in London-Brentford in a duel between the neighbors.

England in goal frenzy

In the parallel game, hosts England did not show any weakness. Even without coach Sarina Wiegman, who tested positive for the corona virus on Friday, the Lionesses easily beat the team from Northern Ireland 5-0 (2-0). With that, England went into the last eight without conceding a goal and without a point.

In Southampton, Fran Kirby broke through the Northern Ireland bulwark in the 41st minute, Beth Mead (45th) added her fifth goal of the tournament before the break. Alessia Russo (48’/53′) made the quick decision with her brace, an own goal by Kelsie Burrows (76′) made the final point.

England meets Spain or Denmark in the quarter-finals, who play second-placed in Germany’s Group B on Saturday.
