Women’s Bundesliga: Wolfsburg struggles to win against Nuremberg

As of: October 6th, 2023 8:32 p.m

In the women’s Bundesliga, VfL Wolfsburg achieved a difficult 1-0 (1-0) win against 1. FC Nürnberg on Friday evening (October 6th, 2023). Fenna Kalma scored the winning goal in the 12th minute.

The VfL Wolfsburg footballers kept their clean slate from the still young Bundesliga season and shot themselves to the top of the table at least until Monday evening.

Without national team captain Alexandra Popp in the starting line-up, the serial cup winners beat newcomers 1. FC Nürnberg 1-0 (1-0) and thus overtook TSG Hoffenheim. However, the Kraichgauer women can regain first place at the end of the third matchday against Bayer Leverkusen.

Wolfsburg changed to six positions

The runner-up, in which VfL coach Tommy Stroot rotated to six positions compared to the away win at Eintracht Frankfurt (4:2), took the lead through debutant Fenna Kalma (12th minute). It was the first competitive goal in a Wolfsburg jersey for the Dutch summer signing.

As a result, the heavy favorites found it difficult to get out of the game; things became dangerous before and after the break, mostly from set pieces. The bottom team from Nuremberg did well without rewarding themselves with a point for their brave guest appearance. This means that the “Wolfs” are now traveling with a tailwind to the important qualifying first leg in the Champions League next Tuesday (7 p.m.) at Paris FC.
