The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg have won the top game of the Bundesliga and thus finally knocked their pursuers from Eintracht Frankfurt out of the title race.
The second-placed team defeated the third-placed team on Sunday (February 11, 2024) 3-0 (0-0). The decisive factor in the game was an own goal by Frankfurt goalkeeper Stina Johannes in the 57th minute. The 24-year-old had actually already caught the ball after a long throw-in from VfL, but then let it bounce back into her own goal.
Successful response from the “she-wolves”
Lena Lattwein (86th minute) and Vivien Endemann (90th + 3) scored two more goals shortly before the end. In front of almost 9,000 spectators, the Frankfurt team played a good game, especially in the first half. They also had the best chances of the game thanks to Laura Freigang (45th) and Lara Prasnikar (74th).
In the end, Wolfsburg gave a successful answer to their disappointing 1-1 draw in Leverkusen. In the table they remain one point behind FC Bayern Munich. Eintracht, on the other hand, is now seven points behind the defending champions.
Strengthen Bavaria Leading the table
The day before, the Munich team had consolidated their lead in the Bundesliga table with a resounding win in Cologne. The defending champions won 5-0 (3-0) against relegation-threatened FC.
Linda Dallmann (18th minute) got the dominant FC Bayern on track early on. Cologne’s Janina Hechler (34th) scored a strange own goal, and before the break Lea Schüller (45th + 3) increased the score with a goal worth seeing. European champion Georgia Stanway (52nd) and substitute Jovana Damnjanovic (64th) ensured Munich’s biggest win of the season with their goals in the second half.
No winner in the pursuit duel
There had previously been no winner in the pursuit duel between 1899 Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen. Rieke Dieckmann (45′) gave Werder the lead, Jill Janssens (45’+4) equalized before the break. Hoffenheim is fourth in the table, one point ahead of Bremen.
Essen and Leipzig celebrate Torfestival without a winner
Despite a two-goal lead, the RB Leipzig footballers failed to gain further breathing room in the relegation battle of the women’s Bundesliga. At the start of the 13th matchday on Friday evening, the promoted women played against SGS Essen 4:4 (4:2). Essen’s Laureta Elmazi (3rd) opened the scoring in the home stadium on Hafenstrasse, and Mimmi Larsson (14th) equalized just a little later.
Natasha Kowalski (25th) put the SGS in front again with a penalty kick, but within just two minutes Vanessa Fudulla (26th, 28th) turned the game around for Leipzig with a brace. Frederike Kempe (39′) increased before the break, Kowalski (51′) and Rieke (59′) again tied the score. With ten points, RB remains two points ahead of 1. FC Nürnberg in the first non-relegation spot. SGS Essen is in sixth place in the middle of the table with 18 points.
Duisburg gives up its first win of the season late
In the bottom of the table, MSV Duisburg was able to celebrate a little – and at the same time they will be extremely annoyed. On Sunday evening, the Zebras fought for a point at SC Freiburg – only their third point in their 13th league game. For Freiburg, Janina Minge equalized Duisburg’s opening goal by Taryn Ries in stoppage time (90+4) – the victory was already within reach. A little later, MSV midfielder Natalie Muth, who came on as a substitute in the 68th minute, saw the yellow-red card (90th + 6).
Despite the point gain, the Duisburg women are still seven points short of tenth place, which newly promoted team RB Leipzig occupies. With the draw, Freiburg missed out on making it into the top half of the table.
