Dirk Heinrichs was still responsible as coach for the game against Werder Bremen, even though Marco Gebhardt was signed as coach on Monday. “The girls just have to reward themselves for their work today,” said Heinrichs before the start of the game on the Magenta TV microphone. Anna Gerhard and Pauline Deutsch fell out on the side of the Potsdam women. In attack, the newly signed Canadian Jessica de Filippo celebrated her starting XI debut.

Both teams initially tried to be safe in this duel between the bottom of the table and the penultimate. Werder’s first good chance came from Lina Hausecke (11th minute) after a free kick when she put the ball just wide of the goal from close range. Bremen increasingly took control of the game and deservedly took the lead in the 17th minute through Reene Wichmann. In this phase, Turbine struggled to build up the game and could hardly get out of its own half. So it was only a matter of time before Bremen made it 2-0. It was reserved for Werder captain Lina Hausicke with a remarkable header in the 39th minute – which was also the half-time score.

Potsdam improves, but it’s not enough

Turbine Potsdam improved in the second round. Simone Weidauer pushed hard through to Wibke Meister on the right and the 27-year-old shot in the 59th minute from 16 meters into the far corner to make it 1:2 from Potsdam’s point of view. The goal gave the Brandenburg women a boost and the Heinrichs-Elf settled more often in half of the Bremen women, but there were no longer any compelling chances to score.

The disappointing 2-1 home defeat left Turbine with just one point on the last place in the women’s Bundesliga table. Next Sunday (1 p.m.) the Potsdam women have to play at MSV Duisburg.
