Women of Calabria, the story of six heroic and courageous women

Uan unprecedented female narrative, to retrace the stories of six Calabrian women that in the twentieth century indelibly marked the civil, political and intellectual history of their region and of Italy.

Women of Calabria: from tonight on Rai Storia

Stories of exemplary, adventurous and heroic women, often unknown to the general public, united by a strong sign of modernity. Stories that it is right to know and that will be told in six episodes by six Italian actresses in the docu-series Women of Calabria starting this evening (Tuesday 21 June) on Rai Storia.

Six indelible stories to inspire the new generations

From the journalist and feminist Adele Cambria to the first female mayor in Italy Caterina Tufarelli Palumbo. From the peasant woman victim of the struggle to the large estate Giuditta Levatothe first Calabrian woman to enter Parliament Jole Giugni Lattari. On the other Italian woman mayor Rita Pisano who took office in 1966 as a journalist and writer Clelia Romano Pellicano.

From Tea Falco to Rocìo Muñoz Morales, who tells the Women of Calabria

Six very different women, stubborn, resourceful, courageouswhose stories are symbol and inspiration for the new generations. They are women who they fought to improve the conditions of their land. Which have established themselves in almost totally male areas at the time, and which have reached, emancipating himself from the dogmas in forcethe self-determination of one’s social position.

Testimonies of the time and archive footage

The first to be told this evening by Eleonora Giovanardi will be the journalist and writer Adele Cambria (Reggio Calabria, 1931 – Rome, 2015), a central figure in the pre- and post-1968 Italian era, as well as supporter of the feminist movement from the beginning.

Directed by Mario Vitale it develops on the background of the seafront of Scilla and that of Reggio Calabria and, through original films of the time, retraces the life of this great Calabrian intellectual.

But images, archive footage and interviews with witnesses from the world of culture, politics and civil society, they are used for all stories. Among these stand out the President of the Foundation Nilde Iottithe deputy and Paralympic athlete Giusy Versacethe historian of feminism Fiorenza Taricone, but the names are many.

Discovering the places where the “Women of Calabria” fought

As a background to the story, the places of Calabria in which the six protagonists lived, to also return a journey full of encounters with family members, friends, fellow citizens, who have given their precious contribution to reconstruct their life, battles, difficulties and successes.

Passing from the sea of ​​Scilla and Reggio Calabria to the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna near Crotone, up to Gioiosa Jonica in Locride, the docu-series also represents a physical and symbolic journey into the natural, cultural, urban and historical heritage of the Calabrian territory.

The docu-series is a co-production of Calabria Film Commission and Anelein collaboration with Rai Cultura, produced by Gloria Giorgianni with Emma Di Loreto, from a production idea by Giovanni Minoli.
