A woman in Ecuador who was first mistakenly declared dead and gave signs of life during the wake is now actually dead.
After seven days in the intensive care unit, the woman died, the Ministry of Health confirmed in the Ecuadorian capital Quito via Twitter.
During the hospital stay, she received comprehensive medical care and was regularly examined by specialists, the statement said on Friday (local time).
The woman was taken to a clinic in the city of Babahoyo (Los Ríos province) on June 9 with a suspected stroke. The doctor on duty pronounced her dead because she failed to respond to resuscitation efforts.
Woman woke up during her wake
When relatives were just about to move the supposed corpse in the coffin for the funeral during her wake, the 76-year-old gave signs of life again and breathed, as the newspaper “El Universo” reported, citing the family.
The Ministry of Health had announced that it would investigate the case. The government wants to clarify how it could happen that the woman was first mistakenly pronounced dead in the hospital and then almost buried.
