Woman killed by drunk driver who filmed recklessly: 1.5 years in prison

A 34-year-old man from Den Bosch has to go to jail for a year and a half because he caused a fatal accident on the A59 near Rosmalen. This has been determined by the court in Den Bosch. A 21-year-old woman was killed in the accident on July 14, 2018. Three other occupants of the Renault Clio were seriously injured. The accident happened while the inhabitant of Den Bosch was filming himself.

During the fatal accident, he wasn’t just filming himself. He was also drinking alcohol and lit a cigarette. One of the videos shows how cups and a bottle of Bacardi go around in the car. According to the police, they shared those images with others via their phones.

Evening steps
The five occupants returned at night from an evening out in a disco in Beesd in Gelderland. First, a 17-year-old boy was behind the wheel. He was banned from driving by the police because he did not have a driver’s license. The 34-year-old from Den Bosch then took over the wheel. His 14-year-old cousin and two women from Oss and Gemert were also in the car.

Things went wrong at the Kruisstraat exit on the A59. The car hit the median barrier first. The car then hit the right side of the road and ended up in a dry ditch via a traffic bollard.

The man from Bossche and the woman from Gemert were thrown from the car. This woman did not survive the blow. The three other occupants were seriously injured and had many fractures and bruises.

Lesser punishment
The court accuses De Bosschenaar of driving very carelessly and inattentively. He had consumed way too much alcohol and was still drinking in the car. The death of the woman from Gemert is therefore due to his behavior.

The court had previously sentenced the man to two years in prison. De Bosschenaar appealed against that sentence. The sentence is now six months less, partly because the man himself was also injured and is still suffering psychologically. He will receive a ten-month probation, which he must serve if he commits another offense within two years. He is also not allowed to drive a car or any other motor vehicle for five years.
