A 40-year-old Ossenaar was arrested on Thursday who is suspected of setting fire to a chalet on Hermanusweg in Schaijk. At the time, a woman was sleeping in it. She managed to escape the fire. The chalet was seriously damaged.
The woman discovered the fire around half past four Wednesday night. She told police she was sleeping and was awakened by a bang. Then she saw that her chalet was on fire. She called 911 herself. This was reported by the police on Friday morning.
According to the fire brigade, who quickly brought the fire under control, the fire could not have started just like that. Officers then searched for a suspect.
Trace research
Not much later, officers saw a motorist who noticed them. This driver smelled of alcohol and was indeed intoxicated. Not much later, officers received indications that this man was involved in the arson attack in Schaijk.
The police are investigating because there are indications that the fire was started. Forensic investigators are looking for clues at the crime scene this Friday. The suspect is being brought before the examining magistrate in Den Bosch. His involvement in the arson is still under investigation.
