The accident happened around 7:15 am in the center of Waregem. The driver of the garbage truck was reversing while two of the driver’s colleagues were holding up traffic. But at that moment a pedestrian also walked into the intersection. She ended up under the colossus and had to be resuscitated by the emergency services. The victim was taken to the AZ Groeninge in Kortrijk in a critical condition. She has since died there.
The driver of the garbage truck was unhurt, but he and his colleagues were deeply impressed.
The public prosecutor’s office is investigating how the accident could have happened.
