Woman does not know she is pregnant and gives birth to a son on flight from Ecuador to Amsterdam | Abroad

A baby was born earlier this week on a KLM plane en route from Guyaquil in Ecuador to Amsterdam. A spokeswoman for the airline said on Saturday evening that medical professionals assisted with the delivery, “for which we are very grateful. Mother and child are doing well.” KLM cannot provide any further information for privacy reasons.

The Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem Zuid reports on its website that a mother and a child born in an airplane were admitted this week. According to the hospital, the woman, Tamara, was en route by plane from Ecuador to Spain, with a stopover at Schiphol Airport.

“A few hours before landing in the Netherlands, her stomach hurt and she decided to go to the toilet. To her great surprise, after two contractions, she suddenly had a baby in her hands: son Maximiliano. Tamara had no idea she was pregnant and was quite taken aback by the event.”

According to the Spaarne Gasthuis, there were also two doctors and a nurse from Austria on the plane, who could help the mother after this surprising delivery. The baby is named after one of these people. After arriving at Schiphol, the two were taken by ambulance to the Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem South.

“Both Tamara and Maximiliano were fortunately in good health,” writes the Spaarne Gasthuis. “The team on the birth ward has done everything possible to ensure that both received the right care and were helped on their way for the necessary papers for Maximiliano. As soon as possible, Tamara and Maximiliano will continue their journey to Madrid. The Spaarne Gasthuis wishes them much good!”
