Woman dangles from apartment building after fire in New York caused by lithium battery, dozens injured Abroad

At least 38 people were injured in a fire at an apartment complex in Manhattan in New York City on Saturday. Two victims are said to be in critical condition and at least five others suffered serious injuries, the local fire chief told CNN.

Firefighters had to pull a woman who was in the apartment one floor below through a window. Someone else had to be rescued from the burning apartment with ropes. This can be seen in the video at the top of this article. The building has 37 floors and 292 apartments.

According to Frank Leeb of the New York Fire Department, using rope is “a last resort for firefighters.”

Lithium-ion battery

The New York Fire Department reports that the fire was caused by a type of battery that is often used in e-bikes and electric scooters, among other things.

According to the chief of the fire service, nearly two hundred fires have already been started in New York this year by a so-called lithium-ion battery. “This year, six people have already died from these types of batteries,” said the chief opposite CNN.

Fires caused by this type of batteries are generally intense, authorities report ‘The New York Times’. They can quickly derail when combustible material is nearby.

It is believed that the residents of the apartment where the fire broke out on Saturday were repairing bicycles. The New York Times reports that there were at least five e-bikes in the house on the twentieth floor. According to the newspaper, it was forbidden to take e-bikes into the building.
