The local police of zone LaMa (Lanaken and Maasmechelen) received a report on Friday of a stabbing in the Azaleastraat in Lanaken. A 58-year-old woman from Lanaken had been stabbed in her abdomen in her home. Emergency services rushed to the scene and the woman was taken to hospital under police escort. The woman is said to be stable, but her medical condition is not yet clear.
Shortly after the facts, a 57-year-old man from Lanaken tried to take his own life by jumping into the canal (Zuid-Willemsvaart). A passerby saw the incident and contacted the emergency services. Divers from the fire brigade were able to get the man out of the water and started CPR, but the man eventually died. Presumably it concerns the perpetrator of the stabbing, the ex-partner of the victim, but this is not yet certain.
The Limburg public prosecutor’s office sent the judicial lab and the medical examiner to both locations for the necessary determinations. The investigation is continuing.
