Wolverhampton Wanderers have suffered a setback when looking for a coach. Corresponding English media reports, among others, of the “BBC” and the “GuardiansAccording to top candidate Julen Lopetegui, he will not be the successor to Bruno Lage, who left office after a little over a year after losing at West Ham United at the beginning of October. Lopetegui, recently released from Sevilla FC, is said to have canceled the “Wolves”. It is said that family reasons were decisive for the decision.
Lopetegui’s 92-year-old father is reportedly ill, which is why the Spanish coach prefers to stay by his side. The English NewspaperExpress & Starreported that there had been talks between the coach and the club. Accordingly, Jeff Shi, CEO of the “Wolves”, flew to Spain on Monday to conduct negotiations with Lopetegui and his advisor Jorge Mendes – without success. For the club, this is the second rejection by Lopetegui, who turned down an engagement with England in the summer of 2016 before taking over the Spanish national team. In that year the Chinese conglomerate “Fosun” joined the “Wolves”, Lopetegui should have become the first coach in the era of the new owners.
For the 56-year-old, his time at Sevilla came to an end after more than three years with 170 games and a point average of 1.85. A 1: 4 in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund sealed his end. It is now unclear which coach the “Wolves” will now focus on after Lopetegui’s cancellation. The name Bo Svensson, among others, has recently been circulating in the rumor mill. For the time being, the team will be looked after by Steve Davis, who lost 3-0 at Chelsea in his first game. After nine games, the “Wolves” are in 18th place with six points and have only won one game.
