Wolter Kroes about running away from HLF8: ‘I was shocked by push message’

Wolter Kroes first wanted to stay with HLF8 after his son’s bicycle accident. He only left when he received a push message about the serious incident, says Shownieuws star Bart Ettekoven.

Wolter Kroes was actually supposed to give the closing performance in the very last episode of HLF8 on Friday night, but he left rehearsals because of a cycling accident with his son. He was rushed to hospital and was unconscious for about an hour. There was therefore fear of serious injury.

Push message

Initially, Wolter wanted to stay with HLF8, show connoisseur Bart Ettekoven explains Show news. “Wolter received a phone call from his son there that his other son, so his brother, had been hospitalized after an accident. But he says: ‘There’s nothing serious, so you can just keep singing there and we’ll call you afterwards.’”

And then? “So Wolter initially stayed there, but then suddenly received a push message from a newspaper, I believe from the Algemeen Dagblad, that an air ambulance had been called in for a bicycle accident in Koog aan de Zaan. Who thinks: this is about my child!”

‘Go away!’

That push message really woke Wolter up, says Bart, who spoke extensively with the singer. “He says: ‘I don’t remember how, but I was in my car within two minutes. I showed it to Johnny and he said, ‘Get out right away, get to it!’”

Host Johnny de Mol was not angry about it. “Of course he immediately understood that this is much more important than singing a song in his last show. Wolter went there and he was unconscious for almost an hour and they were unable to contact Thomas.”

Very shocked

Wolter’s 14-year-old son only woke up after an hour. “They almost wanted to sort of intervene and he actually woke up just in time and then his heart rate went back to pretty normal.”

Wolter’s son was shocked by a fast electric bicycle, which caused him to turn his handlebars slightly and then was hit by an overtaking scooter. “Wolter said: ‘It really flashed past in my head: we’re not going to lose him here, are we?’ They are really shocked.”
