Wolfsburg’s sports director Marcel Schäfer does not want to attribute the poor performance of the past few weeks to star striker Max Kruse.
“We shouldn’t talk about individual players because no player has lived up to the standards this season. We as a team, we as a club have not lived up to the standards. We shouldn’t reduce it to one person. It’s not entirely fair to rate Max Kruse, how his work against the ball is,” Schäfer told the TV channel “Sky” on the sidelines of the game against Arminia Bielefeld.
Schäfer sees a fundamental problem with this year’s Champions League participants.
The whole team didn’t do enough, said Schäfer, who refers to the Wolfsburg motto “work, football, passion”: “Last year we defined ourselves through work, especially through work against the ball.” You have to be honest with yourself.
The team didn’t do that this year. VfL is in table 14. in acute danger of relegation.
