WM | Discus champion Janssen gets top result

Discus champion Henrik Janssen ensured another German top eight result at the World Championships in Athletics.

The 25-year-old jumped 63.80 m in Budapest on Monday, taking eighth place in the spectacular triumph of Olympic champion Daniel Stahl (71.46). The Swede won his second world title after 2019.

“The width wasn’t what I imagined, but eighth place is great. I’m super satisfied,” said Janssen on “ZDF”.

In an exciting decision, silver went to defending champion Kristjan Ceh (Slovenia/70.02), European champion Mykolas Alekna (Lithuania/68.85) completed the podium. In a crazy last set, Ceh initially surpassed his Swedish rival, who then countered with a championship record to great cheers from his fans.

Daniel Jasinski and World Championship debutant Steven Richter were eliminated in qualifying. Ten years ago, Robert Harting was the last German to win a World Cup medal with the discus. At that time, the Berliner won the last of his three world titles.

After three days of competition, the German Athletics Association (DLV) in Hungary’s capital has now recorded four top eight results, more than half of last year’s in Eugene (7). A medal did not jump out for the DLV starters.
