Without Antony, Ajax takes a minimal victory over Sparta

Without star player Antony (who is on his way to Manchester United), Ajax has won the away match against Sparta with 1-0. The only goal of the game was scored by Bergwijn.

The team from Amsterdam was clearly the dominant party with by far the most ball possession in the first half. Devyne Rensch shot the post from close range. Steven Bergwijn was more successful. With a dry bang from outside the box, he gave Ajax the lead in the 36th minute.

Sparta smells blood

The second half started with chances back and forth. For example, Brobbey’s visor was not sharp after a wonderful Ajax attack. Mijnans became dangerous for Sparta. Ajax started to play worse and worse and Sparta smelled blood. Namli and Lokilo were close to a goal, but thanks to Ajax keeper Pasveer, the team from Amsterdam did not score.

In the final phase Ajax also got a number of chances to decide the match. That didn’t happen and that’s why it remained exciting in Rotterdam until the last second.

Ajax setup: feather; Rensch, Timber, Bassey, Blind; Alvarez, Taylor, Tadic; Berghuis (Klaassen/65), Brobbey (Kudus/73), Bergwijn
