With a helmet on, 1 in 3 dead cyclists would survive an accident: why is a bicycle helmet not mandatory?

“Fortunately I had a helmet on”: even before thanking the emergency services, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) praised the helmet on his head this weekend. Rightly so, because with a helmet on, 37 percent of all deceased cyclists who do not wear a helmet could still tell the story of their accident. Nevertheless, competent minister Lydia Peeters, De Croos party member, does not want a mandatory bicycle helmet. Why not? In which countries is this the case? And what do doctors think about this?
