With a bit of luck, AZ hopes to take third place and thus ‘a prize’

The season could end with ‘a prize’ for AZ, according to trainer Pascal Jansen. Then the Alkmaarders have to win against PSV on Sunday and they depend on the result of Ajax. “We are now assured of Conference League football and third place is Europa League football. We certainly see that as a prize in that respect,” says Jansen.

A lot has happened at PSV in the past week with the departure of trainer Ruud van Nistelrooij. Jansen still knows him from his time in Eindhoven and expects that another PSV will emerge. “They had a plan for this match, but you don’t know if they are deviating from it now,” says Jansen about the opponent who may be a bit more unpredictable in Alkmaar. Jens Odgaard is still a question mark at AZ and Mexx Meerdink is missing due to a finger injury.

“I think the club has done a good job and acted decisively. That is what I think is the most important thing”

“Maybe some other people who come into the field or some nuances they make, but we will have to anticipate that in the game,” Jansen continues, who does not expect PSV to play very differently. In any case, AZ will have to win to have a chance at third place. “We start from our own strength and play at home. We go for it as much as possible.”

AZ riots

Last week, AZ’s sporting success snowballed considerably because it went completely wrong after the match against West Ham United last week. Supporters of the Alkmaarders stormed a stand full of English fans. “It is extremely unfortunate that it happened,” says Jansen. “I think the club has done a good job and acted decisively. I think that is the most important thing.”

Although there is still one game on the program for the Alkmaarders, behind the scenes there is already a lot of puzzles for next season. To accommodate the possible departure of Milos Kerkez, Norwegian left back David Møller Wolfe was taken over from SK Brann. “He is a very talented boy with a lot of offensive drive in his game,” says Jansen about the acquisition, who will join the national team of Norway.

The match between AZ and PSV starts next Sunday at 2.30 pm. With a win, the Alkmaarders can still climb to third place, but then they will depend on the result at Ajax, which will visit FC Twente. If points are lost, AZ will have to settle for fourth place in the Eredivisie. The denouement in the Eredivisie can be followed live on NH Radio on Sunday from 2 p.m.
