Shooting stars in Zoetermeer
If you are going to look at this natural phenomenon, it is best to do so in the Balijbos, the Bentwoud, the Buytenpark or around the Zoetermeerse Plas. During the peak of the stellar shower, up to 30 meteors per hour can be visible. The shooting stars can also become visible in the days before and especially after. Hopefully we can see the stars well, but that will depend on the clouds that hang over Zoetermeer and any light pollution.
More shooting stars
Matthijs van der Linden, meteorologist at weatheronline.nl explains: “December 14 will be the next time we will have a star shower, but the disturbing influence of the moon will limit the number to 30 to 40 visible meteors per hour. The number of meteors we can see this coming weekend will be greater this year than the number of Perseids that passed in August.”
What is a shooting star?
Shooting stars are flashes of light that occasionally appear in the starry sky. However, the flashes have nothing to do with stars. They are caused by space debris, often no larger than a grain of sand. That debris ends up in the Earth’s atmosphere about 100 kilometers above our heads. Due to the high speeds, the air at the front of such a grit particle is compressed, heated and made to glow. We see that as a flash. The speeds of the Perseids are usually over 200,000 km/h.
