It’s Sunday evening, 7.30 p.m. – and the “Heuberger” on the Red Island in Schöneberg is almost full. We have not reserved. but luck: the waiter got us three seats directly at the counter.

You can also experience the great atmosphere of the restaurant from here. Dark wood paneling meets gleaming white walls. Stucco completes the high ceiling. Paintings of old Berlin cityscapes adorn the walls.

It is a mixture of a traditional Berlin pub and southern German local colour. It’s being served here – on the plates.

There are salads, schnitzel, Maultaschen, dumplings, but also tarte flambée. There is a large selection of vegetarian dishes! I decide on the cheese spaetzle – the special variant: Sauerkraut is mixed into the spaetzle.

In terms of taste, this results in a wonderful combination: the acidity of the cabbage paired with the mildness of the cheese.

The portion costs 14.90 euros and is just the right size. Because spaetzle in particular can quickly cause an unpleasant feeling of fullness.

We recommend a Fürstenberg Pils (3.20 euros). A wonderfully tasty beer!
