A heavy hailstorm has caused winter scenes in Amsterdam this afternoon.
In the center it went wild around 3.30 pm. About twenty minutes later the storm came over Nieuw-West.
According to Jaco van Weezel from the weather site Weatheronline it is due to showers that slowly pass over. “And because they migrate slowly, so much hail can fall that it turns white for a while. Something that happens more often in September, but certainly not every year.”
He calls the weather cold for the time of year. “Normally it is now 17 to 18 degrees and this afternoon we are around 14 degrees. During showers it is cooler.”

NH weatherman Jan Visser calls the storm a real autumn situation. “There was a lot of hail because of the cold in the air.” He says that the heavy shower did indeed mainly affect Amsterdam.
A tree has also fallen on the Herengracht. It is unclear whether this is due to this storm.
