Winkel Sport is the equivalent of Seraing, but still goes down
Home team not impressed
Winkel Sport already received a first division team in the Ter Schueren stadium in the sixteenth final last season. Then cup winner RC Genk came to visit, and won 0-6. With the arrival of Seraing, the men of trainer Verhoeven clearly had the plan not to allow a monster score this time. Despite the limited preparation, Winkel played a league match against O. Charleroi barely 48 hours earlier.
The class difference between the co-leader in the first national (Winkel has a handsome 9 out of 9) and the number sixteen of the Jupiler Pro League turned out not to be that big. What’s more, the reds and blacks start the match well and get a good chance to take the lead via Kudimbana. But the goal falls on the other side. Via Manzoni, Seraing sparingly takes the lead on the half hour: 0-1. Even before the break, the home team gets the chance to equalize, but Daan De Bouver’s free kick is stopped by Seraing’s keeper: 0-1 halfway. (Read more below the photo)

After the break – which lasted a little longer due to a cloudburst – there was no class difference on the field. The home team had the best chances. Michiel Clyncke tried twice. Moments later, his striker brother De Bouver was very close to the equalizer, but it was not to be. Winkel kept coming and was by far the most dangerous team in the second half. With a free kick from Deschilder and a header from close range via Libbrecht, the 1-1 would have been more than deserved. But – as so often in the cup – the eager underdog has to lose out to the first division. A harmless shot by Bernier deviates, in injury time, and so Winkel leaves the cup after a 0-2 loss against Seraing.
